Formally, Islamic studies often refer to a dense academic disciple focused on understanding the historical and philosophical aspects of Islam.  In the history of the discipline, Islamic studies have been taught from two perspectives: Secular and non-secular. Western instruction often chooses the path of secularism compared to the Eastern instructions that operate from a non-secular perspective.
